The Portuguese Water Dog was used by fishermen to help herd fish into their nets, carry messages from boat to boat, and bring in the nets that were in need of repair. Because they had such important jobs and worked very hard, when the crew ate,  they were fed equal portions of fish. They are truly a working dog!

The Portuguese Water Dog was on the verge of extinction in 1970, to the point of being described by The Guinness Book of World Records as the rarest dog breed in the world. Through dedicated breeding programs, they are now AKC recognized and are a flourishing breed.  For further information regarding the fascinating history of this breed, please read the book "The New Complete Portuguese Water Dog."

We hope you will take some time to browse our site.  We have posted general information about the breed, pictures of our crew in action, as well as some happy dogs in happy homes.  We also have puppies available to qualified applicants.  Thanks for stopping by!
